THURS 31 JAN 2013

With another stomy and wet overnight and the propect of  afine day decided to  an ivite from Vic T and Eric W to go and  to ERNESETTLE CREEK, before leaving a quick look over T'stone Marsh - 30 TEAL, 13 GADWALL, 10 WIGEON, 8 SHOVELER.As I was getting into the car a BLACK REDSTART on house roof.

At Ernesettle Creek - very good views of the LESSER YELLOWLEGS also 10 BLACK TAILED GODWIT 2 GREENSHANK . On the main estuary 200 AVOCET.

The patch specie list for Jan finished at 108 - the highest Jan count since I started more detailed records 3 years ago

WED 30 JAN 2013

After a stormy and wet overnight the morning produced sunny spells although a strong W wind..Big reduction in duck on T'stone Marsh whether this is due to rising water levels or rhe strong / gale force winds.

This am - 25 WIGEON, 15 TEAL, 9 GADWALL, 5 SHOVELER.

On South H Marsh - 60 WIGEON, 50 TEAL, 15 SHOVELER.

On the beaches/ rocks 15 TURNSTONE, 4 SANDERLING. Offshore ( 2mtre Swell )

30 GANNET, 9 FULMAR, 16 KITTIWAKE, 2 COMMON GULL, 1male WIGEON flew east, 8 AUKS.

Quick stop off at WEST BUCKLANd produced a few GOLDCREST and a SISKIN.

TUES 29 JAN 2013

Weather just got worse - .

A lot of the duck have moved out from T'stone marsh or are hiding in the reeds. Arrivals overnight were 2 SHELDUCK.

Ventured out this afternoon for an hour went over to South Huish Marshstill there were 70 TEAL, 40 WIGEON , 14 SHOVELER. Surprised to relocate the RUFF ( last seen on Sat )  feeding in the field at the side of the copse, gave good views.

On the rocks 3 SANDERLING, 8 TURNSTONE and the imm male BLACK REDSTART.

 

 

MON 28 JAN 2013

Clear skies at 8am didn't last long, rain by 10.30, gale force SW wind and then it just went downhill.

No change in species from yesterday , seemed a reduction in TEAL. On the rocks - 8 TURNSTONE, 4 SANDERLING, 1 RINGED PLOVER. The imm male BLACK REDSTART still by the flats .

Offshore only a sprinkling of GANNET, KITTIWAKE with a RAZORBILL on the sea 

Met Nick T this am , whist counting his RSPB garden birds he flushed a WOODCOCK - I bet there will not be many lists submitted  with that specie on it. Same corner of his garden where he had a BITTERN 2 years ago !

SUN 27 JAN 2013

A sunny day with a F8 WNW wind , could not put the scope up so no seawatching this am .

On T'stone Marsh almost all the duck were at the rear of the marsh - 50 TEAL, 45 WIGEON, 25 GADWALL, 15 SHOVELER.

Met up with Graham Daw for our regular Sunday walk around the Bay. On South Huish Marsh the duck were tucked in behind some of the reeds -  120+ TEAL, 40 WIGEON, 11 SHOVELER, 40 + SNIPE, 2 GREY PLOVER still  there. Amongst the Gulls were at least 25 LESSER BLACK BACKED.

Only waders on the rocks were  3 TURNSTONE

Near Huxton Cross Graham had a flock of 30+ GOLDEN PLOVER.

The Shoveler total of  26 is the highest of the winter

SAT 26 JAN 2013

Late posting as i was away most of the day.

Every morning my first task is to look out over the Marsh, wondering what might have arrived overnight, to my great surprise a superb BARN OWL (107 ) was drifting past my window - WOW, this is only the second record  over the marsh in the last 4.5 years.

 Went over to South Huish marsh to try and relocate the RUFF - I didn't but Nick T &AJL did . The BLACK REDSTART was still on the rocks and AJL had a female on the last house before the footbridge..

On my return a phone message from visiting birders of a female MARSH HARRIER (108 ) over T'stone Marsh at 14.20 

My trip out was to try and catch up with the WAXIWINGS reported near Stover park on the A38. Success - managed to get very good views of 8 Birds

FRI 25 JAN 2013

Back to normal with the weather - Cloudy, showers from 10.30, SE f5/6 wind .

On T'stone Marsh- 15 GADWALL, 17 SHOVELER, 55 WIGEON, 30 TEAL, 30 SNIPE

Managed just over a 2hr sea watch from the shelter of the flats- 75 GANNET, 21 KITTIWAKE, 5 FULMAR, 4 GUILLEMOT, 21 RAZORBILL and 15 AUK sp. 2 RED T DIVER on the sea then east (10.25 & 1150 ) 1 GREAT N DIVER  on sea at 11.40.

On rocks - the imm male BLACK REDSTART, 4 SANDERLING, 2 RINGED PLOVER,

10 TURNSTONE ( all giving great views down to less than 10 feet )

A quick look at S H Marsh at 12.15 proved very worthwhile - 3 SHOVELER, TEAL, WIGEON, 2 LAPWING and a RUFF (106 ). This is the first winter record for a few years.

THURS 24 JAN 2013

Whist still cold a much better day with some blue sky after 10.30 and NO rain- seems ages since a whole day without any precipitation, also a good days birding

On T'stone Marsh - 40 WIGEON, 50 TEAL, 16 GADWALL, 8 SHOVELER,

On South Huish marsh - 85 TEAL, 25 WIGEON, 125 + LAPWING ( came on to the marsh at 10.45 until 11.30 when spooked by a PEREGRINE )  2 GREY PLOVER,

2 DUNLIN, 25 SNIPE

Met Terry Lakeman at 11.00 who had covered the beach/rocks where he had found a very confiding  imm male BLACK REDSTART ( viewed down to 10 feet ),also

3 RINGED PLOVER, 4 SANDERLING, 5 TURNSTONE.

Next stop was the fields between Upton X and Huxton X where the largest flocks of the winter - 175+ LAPWING, 300 + GOLDEN PLOVER,. also 20 REDWING and 15 SKYLARK .

Stopping of by the bridge in West Buckland a great morning just got better with

6 SISKIN ( 105 ), a NUTHATCH, 3 GOLDCREST .

Driving across the bridge at Aveton Gifford at 14.30, stopped to talk to Eric W and rewarded with a flyby KINGFISHER and 2 EGYPTIAN GOOSE . Eric also confirmed a GREY PLOVER on the marsh ( likely to be the 3rd one from T'stone yesterday),  and 2 GREEN SANDPIPER.

 

 

WED 23 JAN 2013

Still a snow fee zone, however today was bitterly cold with frequent showers, little wind and poor viz.

On T'stone Marsh TEAL down to 35 with WIGEON upto 55. Could only find 4 GADWALLand 2 SHOVELER..

More duck on South Huish Marsh - 125 + TEAL, 14 SHOVELER, 25 WIGEON. The surprise was to find 3 GREY PLOVER, also 10 LAPWING, 2 DUNLIN, 1 RINGED PLOVER, 50 + SNIPE, 5 SKYLARK over.

In the copse area 6 REDWING, 6 SONG THRUSH, 20 MEADOW PIPIT

On the rocks 17 TURNSTONE ( highest total of the winter )

On the sea - 2 BLACK THROATED DIVER ( 104 ) and 1 RED T DIVER flew off at 11.25  . Male COMMON SCOTER on sea and 15 flew east . A few AUKS flying east

TUES 22 JAN 2013

Has got to go down as the worst day for birding for a long while. Whilst we are still a snow fee zone the amont of water coming off the fields is the most I can remeber. Ventured out this morning , was soon back home the road to South Huish marsh was flooded.

Decided to be a real anorak- how many species could I see from my house - finished up with 37.Highlights were -

On the Marsh-35 WIGEON, 60 TEAL,  22 GADWALL, 8 SHOVELER, 1 LITTLE GREBE, 3 LITTLE EGRET, 30 SNIPE. In the garden /fields- 1m BLACKCAP, 1 ( very wet ) f BLACK REDSTART, 15 MIPIT, 3 REDWING, , 10 REED BUNTING, 8 GOLDFINCH, 15 CHAFFINCH 1 GREENFINCH

MON 21 JAN 2013

A very cold night resulted in both marshes being frozen- T'stone only 30% whereas South Huish was over 70%.

Compared with yesterday nothing on the sea .

On T'stone Mrash - 46 WIGEON, 35 TEAL, 26 GADWALL (new patch record )

9 SHOVELER, 20 SNIPE . AJL had 2 PINTAIL and the BLACK REDSTART.

On South Huish Marsh- 60 TEAL, 2 WIGEON, 2 SHOVELER, the 2 GREY PLOVER still, 1 RINGED PLOVER, 2 LAPWING + 55 over. In the copse 15 REDWING, 1 FIELDFARE.

At 11.35 brief views of a male HEN HARRIER flying over west.

ON the beaches AJL found 3 SANDERLING, 3 TURNSTONE, 1 RINGED PLOVER.

A walk round the top end of South Milton Ley  managed to flush a WOODCOCK (103 ) and a SNIPE. 12 CHIFFCHAFF, CETTIS WARBLER, 1 REDWING with 17 LAPWING over.

SONG THRUSH count today was 14

SUN 20 JAN 2013

A very cold am with 100% cloud , although little wind . A nice flat calm sea .

At 9.00 on T'stone Marsh the first GREEN SANDPIPER ( 99)-in flight calling , 45 TEAL, 35 WIGEON, 18 GADWALL, 12 SHOVELER, 20 SNIPE . On the Mead Est. a female BLACK REDSTART.

Further evidence of cold weather movement - Offshore 10+ RAZORBILL, 1 GUILLEMOT, 14 TEAL, 1m + 30 COMMON SCOTER -east, 10 WIGEON, 1 RED T DIVER -east , 1 GREAT C GREBE ( 100 ). On the rocks 2 TURNSTONE .

At S M LEY - Bob B had 6 FIELDFARE ( 101 ), 10 REDWING, 20 + SONG THRUSH, 12 CHIFFCHAFF.

South Huish Marsh  held - 90 + TEAL, 25 WIGEON, 2 SHOVELER, 125 + SNIPE, 9 DUNLIN, 2 GREY PLOVER ( 102 )  4 LAPWING, 1 WATER RAIL ( feeding in the open )

12 MOORHEN, 4 SONG THRUSH

At 13.30 a flock of 40 GOLDEN PLOVER flew over .

Next week is looking good !

Jan. records for Grey Plover are unusual

SAT 19 JAN 2013

First sign of any cold weather action was a small flock of Duck on the sea - surprisingly they turned out to be 13 GADWALL, 8 SHOVELER, 1 WIGEON . On the rocks/ beaches were SANDERLING, TURNSTONE, RINGED PLOVER .

On T'stone Marsh this am -35 TEAL, 30 WIGEON,  11 GADWALL, 9 SHOVELER.In my garden at 9.30 a female BLACK REDSTART on the feeders 10 REED BUNTING, 12 CHAFFINCH and on the fence a SPARROWHAWK.

The total of 24 GADWALL is another ptach record for this specie - 17 SHOVELER is also the highest count of the winter.

FRI 18 JAN 2013

Whilst there was some snow in the early hours by 08.00 it was back to 100% cloud, heavy rain , poor viz and a SE 4/5 wind.

Using the car for shelter spent 1.5 hours seawatching - only 100 GANNET,

5 TURNSTONE  2 RAZORBILL and a KITTIWAKE seen ,PEREGRINE ( 97 ) over .

At Horswell House a male BULLFINCH and a MISTLE THRUSH ( 98 ).

On T'stone Marsh -15 GADWALL, 11 SHOVELER, 60 TEAL, 35 WIGEON, 3 LITTLE EGRET.

Still no sign of any cold weather movement , with all the snow/ice north of EXETER they will surely find the balmy conditions here soon .

THURS 17 JAN 2013

A cloudy day with a cold SE 3/4 wind .

On T'stone marsh this am - 65 TEAL, 35 WIGEON, 13 GADWALL, 11 SHOVELER, 57 SNIPE - also AJL flushed a JACK SNIPE at 12.30.

On S H Marsh - 75 TEAL, 1 f WIGEON, 35 SNIPE and an ad MED GULL. 2 LAPWING

Offshore 8 WIGEON, 10 MALLARD and 4 GANNET.

Overnight some snow/rain forcast and upto F8 SE winds  so hopefully some new arrivals for Fri.

WED 16 JAN 2013

Anticipated cold weather did not affect the South Hams coastal region, temp above 4o at 0815.

 An increase in Duck on T'stone Marsh at 8am - 35 WIGEON, 80+ TEAL, 17 SHOVELER, 9 GADWALL, 40 SNIPE

On South H Marsh - 45 TEAL, 2 WIGEON, 35 SNIPE, 2 LAPWING

Very Little offshore - 8 WIGEON on the sea , 6 GANNET, 3 RAZORBILL .

With very cold weather further north had a good search round local fields to see if any increase in Thrushes - came up with 4 SONG THRUSH and 25 BLACKBIRD , Did here GOLDEN PLOVER calling  but couldn't locate them

TUES 15 JAN 2013

A sunny am - water levels are returning to normal particularly on South Huish Marsh .A noticeable reduction in numbers of Duck on the marshes - whether at S H M this is due to water level or work being carried out on 2 houses on the SE side of the marsh. This morning there were only 30 TEAL and 2 MALLARD .No sign of the Goldeneye.

On the sea were -30 WIGEON , 7 SHOVELER.

On T'stone Marsh - 15 WIGEON, 17 GADWALL, 35 TEAL, 4 SHOVELER, 10 SNIPE.

First GOLDEN PLOVER ( 96 ) in the fields on outskirts of the village.

In the afternoon  made a visit to Cornwall ( a few years now since we sold our Fort Picklecombe apartment)   -from Torpoint to Looe the main highlights were -

Wacker Quay - 65 Avocet

Millbrook Lake - 1 Egyption Goose, 25 Black Tailed Godwit, 1 Greenshank.

Downderry - 4 Great N Diver, 2 Red T Diver, 1 Black T Diver.

Hannafore -Looe- 2 Great N Diver, 3 Slavonian Grebe..

Coldn't find the Green W Teal or any Spoonbill!!

MON 14 JAN 2013

Heavy rain from 09.45 and poor viz, wind NW 3/4.

Most activity on South Huish Marsh - 70 LAPWING, 125 TEAL, 8 SHOVELER, 1 f GOLDENEYE, 25 SNIPE . 15 WIGEON plus 40 Over and 60+ on the sea  A GREYLAG GOOSE  ( 95 ) in a field.

 Thurlestone Marsh - 50 TEAL, 10 WIGEON, 8 GADWALL, 6 SHOVELER, 60+ SNIPE, 1 LITTLE GREBE .

This pm went over to Kingston - in fields by Langstone Cross were 200+ GOLDEN PLOVER and a ringtail HEN HARRIER

A sunny if cool day with a light NE wind.

Graham Daw joined me on the WeBS count round the Bay. A drake GOLDENEYE was briefly in the Bay close inshore before moving off east at 10.00 - This is my first drake for the patch Also 4 RAZORBILL Later 2 BRENT GOOSE - db also landed in the Bay before moving on to South Huish marsh.

Waders on the beaches / rocks - 6 Ringed Plover, 8 Turnstone, 2 Sanderling.

On the last house as you walk down towards the footbridge -a female BLACK REDSTART ( still there on our way back 2 hrs later )

On South Huish marsh - 85 TEAL, 60 + WIGEON, 6 SHOVELER, 1 SHELDUCK, 1 female GOLDENEYE  and a 3rd BRENT GOOSE. 60 LAPWING, 25 SNIPE

No change to the species or numbers on T'stone Marsh

 

SAT 12 JAN 2013

A blustery day with frequent heavy showers.

On T'stone marsh this am - 22 GADWALL, 4 SHOVELER, 80+ TEAL, 2 SHELDUCK, 1 LITTLE GREBE, 2 LITTLE EGRET, 40 LAPWING.

In a local garden a FIRECREST.

Offshore in a brief visit - 3 BRENT GOOSE -db ( 94 ) flew east, 25 GANNET .

Stopped off at Aveton Gifford - 2 COMMON SANDPIPER, 4 REDSHANK, 30 CURLEW, 2 SHELDUCK, 3 LITTLE GREBE

FRI 11 JAN 2013

Back to earth and normality today- At South Huish Marsh both the PINTAIL and GOLDENEYE seen.

Only bird of interest was in the copse a nice FIRECREST (93 )

Hopefully the anticipated cold spell will bring some new arrivals.

THURS 10 JAN 2013

The dry spell did not last that long- rain set in at 10.30.However the god's were shining when it turned into a really red letter day After 10 years of covering the patch I finally nailed my bogy bird- standing in the rain at West Buckland looking for

a couple of local species I glimpsed a small bird climbing a tree trunk - yes a TREE CREEPER (91 ) but more importantly 232 for the patch. I know it is not even  a scarce bird - I am only aware of 2 other records in the last 5/7 years - both juv's caught and ringed by Bob B as they dispersed from their breeding grounds .

Now back to normality - On T'stone Marsh today -50 TEAL, 27 WIGEON, 14 SHOVELER, 4 GADWALL, 1 GREY WAGTAIL, 1m BLACK REDSTART, , 40 SNIPE, 1 JACK SNIPE ( 92 ), 30 PIED WAGTAIL  to roost, On my feeders - 14 REED BUNTING, 10 GOLDFINCH.

On South Huish Marsh -  65 TEAL, 35 WIGEON, 4 SHOVELER, 2 PINTAIL, 1 f GOLDENEYE, 1 LITTLE GREBE

WED 9 JAN 2013

A day of 2 halves -On T'stone marsh this am all the Gadwall appear to have departed leaving 10 SHOVELER, 12 WIGEON, 50 TEAL. At o8.30 male BLACK REDSTART in my garden.

At South Huish marsh  a nice surprise a female GOLDENEYE ( 90 )- we usually only get one record a year and in the previous 2 years it has been Nov/ Dec. Also 2 PINTAIL, 80 TEAL, 30 WIGEON, 2 SHOVELER .

On the rocks 2 RINGED PLOVER, 3 TURNSTONE. 

At 12.00 set off to try and add a few birds to the year list- reasonable success -

Buckfastleigh- Male & Female GOOSANDER.

Exminster - ROSE COLOURED STARLING.

Bowling Green Marsh / Viewing platform -high tide - c1000 BLACK TAILED GODWIT, 200+ AVOCET, 10 GREY PLOVER, 2 KNOT, 5 GREYLAG GOOSE, 5 PINTAIL ,lots of REDSHANK, CURLEW, DUNLIN,SHOVELER.

Off Goats Walk - the female LONG TAILED DUCK and 2 RED BREASTED MERGANSER.

At Darts Farm the Finches had gone to roost but the 300+ BRENT GOOSE were in the fields 

Only downside was being asked for my passport by TERRY LAKEMAN !! at Bowling Green Marsh

TUES 8 JAN 2013

The anticipated rain kept away until 13.00 although viz not good.Wind F4 S.

On T'stone Marsh - 75 TEAL, 14 GADWALL., 12 SHOVELER, 15 WIGEON, 1 LITTLE GREBE, 1 CETTIS WARBLER. A nice male BLACK REDSTART in the Close with a GREEN WOODPECKER flying over.

Seawatching from the car park for an hour 45 GANNET, 12 RAZORBILL, 15 KITTIWAKE, a RED T DIVER flew west and a male SHOVELER east. 2 SANDERLING on the beach.

On South Huish marsh- 100 TEAL , 25 WIGEON, 3 SHOVELER, 2 PINTAIL. 85 MALLARD is a high count for some weeks , 80+ LAPWING. Amongst GULLS on the Marsh were a 2w MED and a 1w YELLOW LEGGED (89 )

At 23.00 last night  a TAWNY OWL in the garden

Overcast and cloudy day, light S wind .

T'stone Marsh - 14 SHOVELER, 10 GADWALL, 50 TEAL, 6 WIGEON

An hours seawatch from the car park produced a passage of Auks - 215 all east ( of those which could be id'd were Razorbill ) 45 GANNET, 4 KITTIWAKE, 1 FULMAR

Walking over to South Huish marsh at 10.20  a ringtail HEN HARRIER (87 ) flew down the valley and then east .

On the Marsh - 25 WIGEON, 70 TEAL, 4 SHOVELER, 60 LAPWING.

Over at S m Ley - 10 CHIFFCHAFF, 3 GOLDCREST and 6 RAVEN

A Visitor reported 2 MED GULL ( 88 ) on T'stone Marsh

What started out as looking like another dank/drizzly day turned into one of the best of this year. Great morning in company of Graham & Martin Daw saw us seawatching for the first hour which produced a patch record for me of 7 RED THROATED DIVER fling west( a single , 2 & then 4 ), also 10 COMMON SCOTER -east, 1 SHELDUCK, 12+ Auks , 3 RAZORBILL ( on sea )1 FULMAR, 14 WIGEON - west  20+ GANNET, 2 KITTIWAKE and 1 COMMON GULL .

On T'sone Marsh -65 TEAL, 8 SHOVELER, 8 GADWALL, 6 WIGEON

On S H Marsh - 40 TEAL, 15 WIGEON, 5 SHOVELER, 2 PINTAIL, 70 LAPWING, 4 SNIPE , 1 DUNLIN. 

Bob B had 20 CHIFFCHAFF and a GREEN WOODPECKER at S M Ley .

SAT 5 JAN 2013

Spent most of the day off the patch trying to increase my 2013 Devon year list.

Before setting out a male CIRL BUNTING was a good find.

First stop Gara Bridge where  a Dipper can usually be guaranteed - 1 flew upstream 

Then onto Buckfastleigh- 20 Mandarin on the river (no sign of any Goosander ) and Jay.

Next on to Stover C Park - On the feeders Bullfinch and Nuthatch - no sign of any

Marsh Tit. 4 Siskin in the trees.

At Haldon Hill a small flock of 10 Fieldfare .

Despite 2 visits to Exeter services no sign of the Waxwings.

FRI 4 JAN 2013

Another overcast day- On T'stone Marsh at 09.00-  16 SHOVELER, 18 GADWALL, 40 TEAL, 10 WIGEON, 3 LITTLE EGRET, 20 LAPWING flew over east.

On S H Marsh - 50 TEAL, 15 WIGEON, 2 PINTAIL, 4 SHOVELER, 1 LITTLE GREBE, 1 SNIPE, 60 LAPWING over.

Offshore only 2 GANNET, 1 GREAT N DIVER-east and the first FULMAR of the year.

On the flats a 1st w BLACK REDSTART.

Nick T has had  JAY and TAWNY OWL.

 AT S M LEY - 20 CHIFFCHAFF, LINNET, 6+ WATER RAIL.

Nothing to add to yesterdays sightings - interestingly the female BLACK REDSTART on my roof at 12.45.

After  a very quiet early morning decided to boost the 2013 year /Devon list with visits to some of the local sites

1- Bowcombe Creek & Kingsbridge Est. - 1 1st W Med Gull, 50+ Common Gull, 9 Red Breasted Merganser, 6 Bar T Godwit, 1 Greenshank, 20 Dunlin, 1 G C Grebe, 60+ Brent Goose ( db ).

2- Aveton Gifford - 1 Common Sandpiper, 1 Redshank, 30 Curlew .

3- Slapton Ley - 1female Ring-necked Duck, 96 Gadwall, 5 G. C. Grebe, 1 Little Grebe, 2 Black necked Grebe, 1m Shoveler, 1m 5 f Goldeneye., 20 Pochard , many Tufted Duck, 1 imm male Scaup, Female Marsh Harrier.

Offshore - 8 Common Scoter, 1 Red T Diver

Another relatively dry day - very little action offshore -only 15 GANNET and a female EIDER-east , later 30 WIGEON flew west .

On T'stone Marsh this am - 20 GADWALL, 16 SHOVELER, 60 TEAL, 10 WIGEON  .At 13.45 a female BLACK REDSTART in my garden .

Waders on the beaches at high tide - 56 OYSTERCATCHER, 12 RINGED PLOVER, 11 TURNSTONE, 2 SANDERLING.

Finally on S H Marsh - 1 female PINTAIL, 28 TEAL, 20 WIGEON, 1 LITTLE GREBE, 1 WATER PIPIT.

What a change for the New Year - no rain !

 

Late start this morning - Nothing out of the ordinary - Between us Bob & I had 62 species to start the 2013 year list ( will start updating this at the weekend )

On T'stone Marsh - 100 TEAL, 15 GADWALL, 7 SHOVELER, 6 WIGEON ( + 20 over )

10 SNIPE 1 LAPWING
