WED 31 AUG

After some sunny and warm days back to overcast ( until mid aft )with a brisk SW wind , the expected rain did not materialise so no increase in water levels at South Huish Marsh.

Yesterdays ringing by Alan - 8 CHIFFY, 5 WILLOW WARBLER,

3 REED WARBLER, 1 SEDGE WARBLER, 1 WHITETHROAT,

1 TREE PIPIT - Dave Scott also ringing dont have his totals but Bob confirms 5 TREE PIPIT with at least another 6 on site . Must be the best autumn passage for them for some years . 

An early morning visit to South Huish Marsh produced - 1 BLACK T GODWIT, 25 + YELLOW WAGTAIL, 4 WHEATEAR, , 2 TEAL,

20 MIPIT . A large flock of 150+ HOUSE MARTIN passed through

Offshore 20 GANNET and 5 FULMAR .

At South Efford Marsh no change to yesterdays report although no sign of the SPOTTED SANDPIPER

TUES 30 AUG

 

Another fine and sunny day in the Bay .

Started with an hours Garden watch from 07.15 - only 24 species but plenty of birds inc - 6 CHIFFY, 3 WHITETHROAT, 3 BLACKCAP, 2 REED BUNTING, 1 SAND MARTIN.

Waders on Yarmer Beach - 12 RINGED PLOVER,

23 OYSTERCATCHER, 1 DUNLIN . A WHITETHROAT along the path also 2 WHINCHAT.

Reported from South Huish Marsh ealy am - 22 YELLOW WAGTAIL, 1 m BLUE HEADED WAGTAIL , 2 WHITE WAGTAIL, 4 WHEATEAR.

Met Peter Carefoot from Glossop, staying in the village . whilst out walking down the hill to West Buckland yesterday he had a DARTFORD WARBLER (- this is almost certainly a patch first , even Bob cannot remember a previous record .)

 

At South Efford Marsh  Eric reports - 2 CURLEW SANDPIPER,

3 LITTLE STINT, 3 KNOT, 5 SNIPE, 1 GREENSHANK, 35 DUNLIN,

30 RINGED PLOVER, 2 WHEATEAR, 1 YELLOW WAGTAIL

Had a call from Lesley to confirm she had the SPOTTED SANDPIPER again this morning

MON 29 AUG

The Bay is packed out with visitors all the car parks full by 12.00 on a fine sunny ( unusal ) Bank Holiday .

Bob had the best 2 birds of the day - a REDSHANK ( only 2nd record this year )on the rocks and a BLACK T GODWIT on the Marsh where there were also- 35 + YELLOW WAGTAIL ( superb autumn for them. )  3 WHEATEAR, 1juv SHELDUCK, 20 + MIPIT ,

1 GREEN SANDPIPER, and a RINGED PLOVER over

In the copse area  6 CHIFFY and a WILLOW WBLR

The Marsh certainly looks different , should be able to see waders much easier now , there are also some extensions to the scrape areas. All we need now is some heavy rain to fill both pools up

 

Over at SOUTH EFFORD MARSH Eric's wader reports just keep getting better - today 4 juv KNOT ( site record ) 2 CURLEW SANDPIPER, LITTLE STINT, 20+ DUNLIN, 15+ RINGED PLOVER. An OSPREY flew up river this morning and a HOBBY overhead this pm

On Sat he had a marsh tick - a TURNSTONE

Looking forward to visiting S H Marsh in the morning , the work is completed  and already there is some water accumulation .

A sunny and calm morning , nothing offshore but plenty of interest -

4 STONECHAT, 20 GOLDFINCH, 1 SEDGE WBLR, 2 REED WBLR ,

1 GARDEN WBLR, 1 WHITETHROAT, 2 SONG THRUSH, 15 MIPIT ,

1 REED BUNTING, 1 SNIPE ., 2 CLOUDED YELLOW.

40 WILLOW WBLR, 19 CHIFFY, 11 TREE PIPIT ( at least 20 on site - a record total )5 SEDGE WBLR, 2 REED WBLR, 1 GOLDCREST,

A hot and sunny morning ., light breeze.

With maintenace work  due to start at South Huish Marsh decided the only waders on show would be at South Efford Marsh, joinedEric for a couple of hours - on the marsh only - 3 GREENSHANK, 6 COMMON SANDPIPER, 32 CURLEW 6 DUNLIN,

2 RINGED PLOVER, 1 KINGFISHER, 1 WHITETHROAT,

1 juv WHEATEAR.

Dave Pakes went down the estuary later and found the wader flock amongst the samphire- still 2 juv LITTLE STINT and 2 juv CURLEW SANDPIPER along with DUNLIN and RINGED PLOVER 

Bob had at South Huish Marsh - 2 SNIPE, 2 WHEATEAR, 2 YELLOW WAG , 2 WHITE WAG and 20 MEADOW PIPIT

Roger and Helen were ringing at South Milton Ley amongst 72 new birds were - 20 WILLOW WBLR, 8 CHIFFY, 1 BLACKCAP,

2 GARDEN WBLR, 1 GROPPA, 8 SEDGE WBLR, 13 REED WBLR,

12 WHITETHROAT and 3 TREE PIPIT . One of the REED WBLR was a conrol - bird bearing a Dutch ring , it was ajuv so could only have been ringed recently

An overcast morning with a F4 WSW wind

C0uld only manage a short seawatch this morning from Warren Pt

110 GANNET, 11 FULMAR, 4 KITTIWAKE, 12 MANX S'WATER.,

2 BALEARIC S'water. On the beach /rocks  14 OYSTERCATCHER,

6 RINGED PLOVER, 2 SANDERLING.

Along the tidal road /estuary at Aveton Gifford Eric reports - 3 juv LITTLE STINT, 2juv CURLEW SANDPIPER, 40 RINGED PLOVER,

On the Kingsbridge Est Alan reports an OSPREY

SUN 21 AUG

A morning of contrasts sunny periods eventually gave way to cloud and rain . A brisk WNW F 5/6 wind  . Joined by Graham , Martin, Bob and Chris .

Seawatching from 09.00- 11.00 - 710 GANNET ( inc a feeding frenzy flock off Bolt Tail  of at least 500 birds )  140+ MANX SHEARWATER,

3 BALEARIC SHEARWATER, 42 KITTIWAKE, 6 FULMAR, 2 MED GULL

At South Huish Marsh  a small amount of water on the back pool held 10 DUNLIN, 2 CURLEW SANDPIPER ( 172 ), just after 11.00 a small flock of 4 RINGED PLOVER and 6 DUNLIN flew over and were joined by the birds on the marsh and flew west. Also 1 YELLOW WAGTAIL, 1 juv WHEATEAR and 2 TEAL.

On the beach at 12.00 8 RINGED PLOVER , 2 DUNLIN, 1 TURNSTONE.

 

 

At South Efford Marsh Eric reports - 8 DUNLIN with 2 CURLEW SANDPIPER, 11 RINGED PLOVER, 3 GREENSHANK, 2 GREEN SANDPIPER.

 

SAT 20 AUG

After a stormy night expectations were high results not up to what was expected . Very rough seas with a F7 WSW wind , sunny intervals .

Seawatch from the carpark from 07.50 for 3hours , most passage over  around10.00.

Joined by Lesley for part of the watch . Final totals -

315 GANNET, 53 MANX SHEARWATER, 27 FULMAR,

7 KITTIWAKE,2 COMMON GULL , best bird of the morning was a LITTLE TERN (E at 09.46) also an ARCTIC TERN at 10.45 .Amongst the 50 + BLACK H GULL were 2juv MED GULL

Waders on the beach were 15 SANDERLING and

37 OYSTERCATCHER.

At South Efford Marsh Eric this afternoon reports - 9 MED GULL ( 6ad, 1 2w 2 juv ) 1 COMMON GULL, 24 RINGED PLOVER,

FRI 19 AUG

A morning of heavy rain until 11.00 with poor viz offshore, wind SSE F5/6 . One of the best mornings seawatch  this year -

In 3.5 hours - 835 GANNET , 208 MANX SHEARWATER, 5 BALEARIC SHEARWATER, 1 SOOTY SHEARWATER, 14 FULMAR, 2 BONXIE,

24 KITTIWAKE ( all juv's ). 1 SWIFT. all birds moving east

 

At South Efford Marsh Eric reports this afternoon - 8 DUNLIN, 14 RINGED PLOVER, 2 GREENSHANK, 3 GREEN SANDPIPER, 2 COMMON SANDPIPER, 6 SEDGE WARBLER, 4 BLACKCAP, 18 TEAL.

Winds forcast to increase to W/SW F ( overnight and through Sat  ) Could be another good morning from the car park .

THURS 18 AUG

A sunny morning , calm early then a light WSW wind .

An hour around my garden at 07.30 , warblers were 2 BLACKCAP,

2 CHIFFCHAFF, 1 WILLOW WBLR, 1 BULLFINCH, 1 CIRL BUNTING and

2 STOCK DOVE , 54 SWALLOW and 40 HOUSE MARTIN flew up the valley

Went over to South Efford Marsh where Andy Smith was already in the hide - regaled me with details of his recent  trip to the Danube Delta where he was tour leader for Naturetrek. 189 species in 8 days . Birding the Marsh was not at that level, today - 8 DUNLIN, 3 GREENSHANK,

3 GREEN SANDPIPER, 6 COMMON SANDPIPER, 3 RINGED PLOVER ,

5 SNIPE, 1juv WHEATEAR.

WED 17 AUG

 

A cloudy morning with a F4/5 ESE wind, hazy offshore .

First some news from Tuesday - Dave Scott ringed 7 SEDGE WBLR,

5 REED WBLR. A DUNLIN was by the footbridge and 2 GREY WAGTAIL by the sewage works .

At 20.40 the first large SWALLOW roost at T'stone 'Marsh' contained 1250 birds

This morning started off with a seawatch from Warren Pt.A small number of GANNET and FULMAR. At 10.45 2 duck flew into the Bay and landed on one of the rock pools , surprised to find they wre GARGANEY ( in eclipse ), only stayed for 30 sec before flying off towards Bigbury Bay .

Waders on the beach 1 RINGED PLOVER and 1 SANDERLING.

On the Golf Course - 2 WHEATEAR and 2 YELLOW WAGTAIL .

Roger and Helen ringed at South Milton Ley -8 WILLOW WBLR, 6 CHIFFY, 8 REED WBLR, 6 SEDGE WBLR, 3 WHITETHROAT, 1 GARDEN WARBLR,

Friday is looking like one of the best seawatcing days for a few weeks .

TUES 16 AUG

Very little through my garden this morning . After a brief look offshore went over to South Efford Marsh to join Eric . Arrival of some new waders overnight - 10 REDSHANK ( highest total here for some years ),

4 GREENSHANK, 29 CURLEW, 5 GREEN SANDPIPER, 4 COMMON SANDPIPER, 6 DUNLIN, 4 SNIPE, 1 RINGED PLOVER

 

Nick phoned this evening to confirm the maintenace work at South Huish marsh has passed an inspection today , work to commence on Tuesday 23 AUG and will take 7 days .

Nick also confirmed the work at Beesands Hide has now been completed and is open for visitors again .

MON 15 AUG

A fine sunny day with a brisk F5/6 ESE wind . Spent the morning seawatching from Warren Point . Birds logged - 125 GANNET, 100 MANX SHEARWATER ( largest fock 12 ) 22 FULMAR, 6 COMMIC TERN ,

15 OYSTERCATCHER, 3 DUNLIN, 1 RINGED PLOVER , 35 LINNET flew east .

At South Efford Marsh- no sight today of the SPOTTED SANDPIPER, .,

20 RINGED PLOVER, 12 DUNLIN, 2 GREEN SANDPIPER

SUN 14 AUG

Hot sunny morning with all car parks overflowing by 11.00. F3 / 4 E wind

Some indication of how poor the birding was , the highlight was found by Graham on the wires in the lanes - a MISTLE THRUSH !

Offshore many GANNET feeding, 5 FULMAR, 3 MANX SHEARWATER, 1 SWIFT over, by the footbridge a WHITETHROAT and a REED WARBLER.

On South Huish Marsh - 20 MALLARD, 2 TEAL, 1ad 2yng COOT , 2ad 4 yng MOORHEN , 2 LITTLE EGRET, 2 HERON . Steady passage of SWALLOW total over 100 and 20 HOUSE MARTIN

Bob rang at 17.30 - he and Chris had very good views of the SPOTTED SANDPIPER in front of the hide , also 20 RINGED PLOVER, 1 DUNLIN,

1 GREENSHANK

SAT 13 AUG

Started with an hour from my garden , only 26 species, however some evidence of Warblers moving through - 7 BLACKCAP, 3 WILLOW WBLR,

4 CHIFFY and 3 REED BUNTING , 1 CIRL BUNTING .

At South Milton Ley joined up with the ringing team - Helen , Roger, Alan with Bob helping - 54 new birds ringed inc - 2 TREE PIPIT, 8 CHIFFY,

7 WILLOW WBLR, 9 SEDGE WBLR, 5 REED WBLR, 1 KINGFISHER,

1 HOUSE SPARROW,  On site GREEN & GREAT SP WOODY, 1 TAWNY OWL .

Bob had 3 WHITETHROAT by the footbridge .

At South Efford Marsh  Eric reports - 1 GREENSHANK, 8juv DUNLIN,

2 GREEN SANDPIPER, 1juv LITTLE RINGED PLOVER. ( the SPOTTED SANDPIPER was reported by a visitor late pm ) 

 

THURS 11 AUG

An early start this morning , cloudy at first but then sunny periods , a brisk F5 W wind

Offshore 120 GANNET, 60 MANX SHEARWATER, 1 BALEARIC SHEARWATER ( flew east at 08.25 ). 1 COMMON TERN , 2 COMMON SCOTER , a GUILLEMOT landed on the sea ( first Auk for 6 weeks )

Before the farmer went to remove the cattle from the Marsh - 6 DUNLIN, 2 RINGED PLOVER and a juv LITTLE RINGED PLOVER, 3 TEAL

At South Efford Marsh the SPOTTED SANDPIPER showed well this morning , also 6 GREEN SANDPIPER, 12 DUNLIN, 3 SNIPE, 1 REDSHANK , plenty of COMMON SANDPIPER.

Yesterday outside my garden a juv REDSTART and 2 WILLOW WARBLER. Eric also had a REDSTART at Aveton Gifford

TUES 9 AUG

A sunny morning with an increasing NNW wind F4/5 by noon

Offshore around 90 GANNET, 1 MANX SHEARWATER, 1 juv YELLOW L GULL. Only when a flock of 18 GREAT B B GULL flew west I started logging them , a total of 45 flew west many ad  quite high .

On the Beach 6 RINGED PLOVER and 3 DUNLIN.

By the footbridge a WHITETHROAT and a SEDGE WARBLER.

On South Huish marsh the back pool still has some water , on the marsh - 30 MALLARD, 2 MOORHEN and 4 juv COOT. By the copse a juv WHINCHAT, 2 WILLOW WBLR, 2 CHIFFY, 6 STONECHAT, 1 REED BUNTING and a SONG THRUSH.

Alan P ringed at South Milton Ley this am - 38 WILLOW WBLR, 12 SEDGE WBLR, 5 REED WBLR, 5 CHIFFY 2 BLACKCAP .Also on site 2 JAY and a KINGFISHER.

At South Efford Marsh Eric confirms the SPOTTED SANDPIPER still showing up to 12.00 , also 6 GREEN SANDPIPER, 12 COMMON SANDPIPER, 4 DUNLIN, 2 RINGED PLOVER,  2 YELLOW WAGTAIL

MON 8 AUG

A sunny morning with an increasing WNW F 5 wind . Good visability .

Highlight of the day was found on South Efford Marsh late morning by Dave Pake an adult SPOTTED SANDPIPER ( a first for the site ) Still viewable from the hide late this afternoon although can be distant at times . Nice yellow legs and still with spots on breast and flanks . Was first reported on Sat afternoon by Rod Bone , despite extensive searches could not be relocated until this morning . A great Devon record. Also on site - 5 GREEN SANDPIPER, 10 COMMON SANDPIPER, 7 DUNLIN

A 3hr seawatch from Warren Pt only produced - 60 GANNET, 38 MANX SHEARWATER, 6 FULMAR, 10 OYSTERCATCHER, 2 SANDERLING , 1 PEREGRINE . 42 SWALLOW flew N over the sea

SUN 7 AUG

Thick mist until 10.00 then a nice sunny morning with a brisk F5/6 W wind . Joined by Graham , Lesley, Bob and Chris today .

Still some water on the back pool which held 4 DUNLIN, 1 COOT ,

2 TEAL, 6 SAND MARTIN and a SPARROWHAWK over

On the Beach 5 RINGED PLOVER and a SANDERLING . At 1030 a GREENSHANK  ( 171 ) flew over calling but did not land .

Offshore - 10 COMMON SCOTER, 75 GANNET, 27 MANX SHEARWATER,

2 SANDWICH TERN.

A cloudy but still morning - my activity today was restricted to an Hours Garden watch from 07.35 which produced27 species - mist rolled in at 08.00. Highlights were - 3 BLACKCAP, 2 WILLOW WBLR, 1 CHIFFCHAFF, 1 SEDGE WBLR, 1 REED BUNTING , 1m CIRL BUNTING.

Over Huxton Cross a flock of 25 SWIFT, 2 m YELLOWHAMMER in the hedges .

This afternoon a GREEN WOODY around my garden , whist in Nick's garden at South Milton 2 SPOTTED FLY and a family of JAY

WED 3 & THURS 4 AUG

Seawatching on Wed only produced GANNET , 3 FULMAR , 4 MANX S'WATER and 2 RINGED PLOVER flew through 

Picked up Eric and drove over to Black Hole Marsh at Seaton - now that is what you call a marsh reserve , superb facilities for both birds and Birdwatchers . Highlight of course was the LEAST SANDPIPER - Initially spooked by a pair of PRERGRINE,but later gave great views down to 30 yards . Also on the marsh were a WOOD SANDPIPER,  LITTLE RINGED PLOVER ( juv ), RINGED PLOVER, 4 COMMON SANDPIPER, 5 DUNLIN,

2 REDSHANK, 30 BLACK T GODWIT, a CURLEW flew down the river.

10 species of Wader - heaven !

After an hours poor seawatch went to Buckland Valley - 2ad 1juv GREEN WOODY, 1 GREAT SPOTTED WOODY, 1 JAY, 2 CHIFFY, 1 WILLOW WBLR , 3 BLACKCAP, 1 BULLFINCH ,25 HOUSE MARTIN

TUES 2 AUG

Welcome to summer, a night of heavy rain followed by showers , sometimes prolonged . Low cloud , offshore viz poor with mist . A strong SW wind F5/6 .

A 1.5 hour seawatch was poor - Only 60 GANNET, 8 MANX SHEARWATER

our first Juv KITTIWAKE flew east.

Walked over to South Huish Marsh - this had been drained on the 4 July but was still deemed too soft to take the heavy machine to carry out the maintenace work last week. The heavy rain has resulted in the back pool now having 80% water cover and the front pool 30 % .Birds logged on the marsh - 17 MALLARD , 2ad 4 juv MOORHEN , 1 LITTLE EGRET and

2 HERON. A female YELLOW WAGTAIL was in the overflow car park field..

Report rec'd of a HOBBY over the sewage works, RED L PARTRIDGE in the nearby field and TAWNY OWL calling.

 

MON 1 AUG

A cloudy morning with rain starting around 10.00 for the rest of the day . Only a light breeze SW early morning .

A 45 min Garden Watch produced 31 species inc - 20 SWALLOW,

40+ HOUSE MARTIN,2  SAND MARTIN , 5 SWIFT, 1 GREY WAGTAIL, CHIFFCHAFF, BLACKCAP , WILLOW WARBLER.
