WED 30 MAY - NATA VALLEY 

Quick visit before we have to leave , after a very enjoyable 2 weeks 

last visit to the Nata Valley produced -

1ROLLER , 1 LITTLE OWL , 1 BLACK FRANCOLIN ,9 CYPRUS WHEATEAR, 1 CYPRUS WARBLER , 1 OLIVACEOUS WARBLER, 2 SARDINIAN WARBLER , 5 CRESTED LARK, 3JUV CORN BUNTING , 2 RED RUMPED SWALLOW , CHUKAR .

Total species recorded this trip 111 , this year 182

TUES 29 MAY -OMODOS - AGIOS NICKOLAIS 

Last full day decided to take a drive through some scenic routes , 

all the target birds found .

At Dora - 1 ROLLER , 5 CYPRUS WHEATEAR , 1 ELANORAS FALCON , 

2 SARDINIAN WARBLER .

Road through the vineyards- 2 CYPRUS WHEATEAR , 2 SERIN , 6 LINNET , 5 OLIVACEOUS WARBLER, 1 ELANORAS FALCON ,

3 CRETZ BUNTING , 4 CORN BUNTING , 1 TURTLE DOVE .3 SERIN , 

10 CYPRUS WHEATEAR , 3 CYPRUS WARBLER .

Near Mandria - 3 MASKED SHRIKE , 3 CORN BUNTING , 1 BLACK HEADED BUNTING , 2 RED RUMPED SWALLOW , 2 CYPRUS WHEATEAR, 2 SARDINIAN WARBLER .

Road back to Nata Another 6 CYPRUS WHEATEAR.

A morning driving through some of the local roads to the area around Nata - 8 QUAIL ,6 CRESTED LARK , 3 SARDINIAN WARBLER , 

2 RED R SWALLOW, 3 CHUKAR + 14 young , 2 CETTIS WARBLER , 

2 CYPRUS WARBLER ,  1 BLACK FRANKOLIN , 6 CYPRUS WHEATEAR + 2 juv , 1 OLIVACEOUS WARBLER , 6 LINNET , 1 STONE CURLEW ,

4 TURTLE DOVE , 1 HOOPOE .

At Nata New Bridge - 1 BLACK FRANCOLIN , 1AD 1JUV  LITTLE 

RINGED PLOVER.

AT Aspro Dam At 17.00 - 35 Yellow L GULL , 1 PURPLE HERON -over ,

FRI 25 MAY - ZAKAKI MARSH & KENSINGTON CLIFFS 

At Zakaki Marsh - 2WOOD SANDPIPER , 1 SQUACCO HERON 4 LITTLE EGRET, 4 BEE EATER 

At Zakaki Run Off Spent an enjoyable 2.5 hours watching a nice range of species - 3WHITE WINGED BLACK TERN looked splendid , 

3 COLLARD PRATINCOLE - FABULOUS , 15 KENTISH PLOVER ,

18 RUFF ,12 BLACK WINGED STILT ,,1 TURNSTONE ,

12 LITTLE STINT , 2 TEMMINCK’S STINT , 1 GREENSHANK , 

20 CURLEW SANDPIPER , 2 WOOD SANDPIPER , 3 RINGED PLOVER , 

1 GREY HERON ,1 PEREGRINE , AMONGST THE HIRUNDINES -3

Found the entrance to Kensington Cliffs At last , rewarded with great views of - 4 GRIFFON VULTURE , 5 ELANORAS FALCON, 2 ALPINE SWIFT

THURS 24 MAY - KATHIKAS & LATCHING 

The vineyards at KATHIKAS have always produced interesting birds , today - 1 LONG LEGGED BUZZARD , 1 SPARROWHAWK , 1 ROLLER ,

3M BLACK HEADED BUNTING , 2 CETTIS WARBLER, 1 CYPRUS WHEATEAR ,

at Smigies 2 TURTLE DOVE , A F SARDINIAN WARBLER feeding young , 1m CYPRUS WHEATEAR .

WED 23 MAY 

A morning driving through one of the local valleys through Nata to Agio Ionnis - just past Nata the road bridges a river , one of the few with water still flowing . By this bridge - 1 SERIN , SARDINIAN WARBLER , 2 CETTIS WARBLER , 2M CYPRUS WHEATEAR , 2 RED R SWALLOW , 2 OLIVACEOUS WARBLER , CHUKER + 4 young , 

1 F CRETZ BUNTING .

 

Around Agios Ionnis - 10 CYPRUS WHEATEAR , 2M BLACK HEADED BUNTING , 1 ROLLER

Just 2 species today - BLACK HEADED BUNTING & CORN BUNTING 

TUES 22MAY LARNACA REGION .

A dust haze this morning made difficult viewing and photography conditions .

At Larnaca Settlig Pools A big  difference in numbers of birds compared with previous visits earlier this year - 2m SHOVELER , 20 MALLARD , 100 COOT ,8 LITTLE GREBE ,2 LITTLE TURN , 8 SPUR WINGED PLOVER, 1 TURNSTONE ,1 WOOD SANDPIPER .

An enjoyable hour watching the planes landing / departing .

At Periviola Fields at least 6 CALANDRA LARK , 2 BLUE HEADED WAGTAIL .

AT Kiti Dam 2 ROLLER .

Again Oroklini Marsh different - 500+ CATTLE EGRET ( of which c300 were juv’s ), 10 BLACK WINGED STILT ( 3 Sitting ) , 4 SPUR W PLOVER , 2 BLACK TAILED GODWIT , 7 FERRUGINOUS DUCK, 

2F RED CREASTED POCHARD ( with 17 duckling ) this is the only site in Cyprus where they breed ., 1 RUFF 

At 19.30 over Mandria 8 BEE EATER .

MON 21 MAY - AKROTIRI AREA 

Started at Zakaki Marsh - 1 LITTLE TERN , 3 LITTLE EGRET ., 1 CATTLE EGRET , 1 F MARSH HARRIER , 1 ELANORAS FALCON , 

3 BLACK FRANCOLIN .

ZAKAKI RUN OFF -Another good morning for Waders the surprise being a COLLARD PRATINCOLE ( sat on the ground so gave fantastic views , really pleased to get this as none had been reported for a week ) 12 BLACK W STILT , 1 TURNSTONE , 8 TEMMINCKS STINT ,

10 RINGED PLOVER , 2 LITTLE STINT , 15 RUFF, 7 KENTISH PLOVER ,4 WOOD SANDPIPER , 1 GLOSSY IBIS 1F MARSH HARRIER .

 

AKROTIRI  MARSH - ANOTHER GOOD VIST - 

3M 2F LITTLE BITTERN  ( all in flight over a period of 15 min )

3 GLOSSY IBIS , 2 SQUACCO HERON , 1 WOOD SANDPIPER , 2 WATER RAIL ( heard ), 2m FERRUGINOUS DUCK . 

ON LADY’S MILE -just 2 LITTLE TERN & a LITTLE R PLOVER 

Last stop Paphos Sewage Works - 10 SPUR W PLOVER , 

1 BEE EATER .

SUN 20 MAY 

Drove up to Troodos - a round trip of 100 miles through some stunning scenery and narrow roads .

At Platres - 4 CYPRUS WHEATEAR , 1 CUCKOO ( heard ) 2 BEE EATER , 2 BLACKBIRD , 1 WREN , COAL TIT , 1 SERIN , 10 PALLID SWIFT , 1 M GOLDEN ORIOLE 

AT Troodos - overhead flock of 70+ SWIFT which included some PALLID , 2 JAY , 6 COAL TIT , 10 CHAFFINCH , A BONNELLI’S EAGLE , 1 SHORT TOED TREE CREEPER

On the mountain roads back - 1CORN BUNTING , 100 + SPANISH SPARROW , 1 LONG LEGGED BUZZARD , 

At Salamiou - 2 BLACK HEADED BUNTING .

Along the Nata road-4 ELANORA FALCON , AT A RIVER CROSSING -

1 OLIVACEOUS WARBLER , CETTIS WARBLER , LINNET , 1 HOOPOE , 1 SPOT FLY , MANY ROCK DOVE

A morning visit to Paphos Lighthouse - 12 BEE EATER , 1 SPOT FLY ,

1 CORMORANT ,1 LESSER GREY SHRIKE , 1M 1F RED B SHRIKE .

At AGIA Vavara On the pool3 WOOD SANDPIPER.

At 16.30 13 BEE EATER flying N over the house .At 19.45 a HOBBY flew over

Another very hot day up to 34C 

At Zakaki Marsh - 3 WOOD SANDPIPER , REED WARBLER ., SEDGE AND CETTIS WARBLER , GREAT REED WARBLER.

Managed to find the track to Zakaki Run Off - a wader fest ! 

4 BLACK WINGED STILT , 4 LITTLE STINT , 40+ RUFF , 10 RINGED PLOVER , 1 LITTLE R PLOVER , 2 TEMMINCKS STINT , 2 KENTISH PLOVER, 2 MARSH SANDPIPER, 2 WOOD SANDPIPER then finally 

the star bird a BROAD BILLED SANDPIPER ( lifer for me ) , 

2 f MARSH HARRIER , 1 GREY HERON , 1M 4F TEAL , 3 LITTLE EGRET .

STILL over 500 FLAMINGO on the Salt Lake 

Along Lady’s Mile 8 LITTLE TERN ,  4 BLACK W STILT , 1 KENTISH PLOVER , 1F CYPRUS WHEATEAR .

At Akrotiri Marsh a very interesting 90 min which produced - 

2 GLOSSY IBIS , 1 SQUACCO HERON , 2 CATTLE EGRET , 1 COOT , 1 MARSH HARRIER , 1 WHITE WINGED BLACK TERN ( flew around for 10 min at 13.25 ) 1 RED THROATED PIPIT , 1 M WOODCHAT SHRIKE , 1F RED BACKED SHRIKE

THURS 17 MAY 

Arrived very late last night so after going out for provisions a late start at 11.15 . All the sites visited are within a 10 min drive from the house .A total of 38 species recorded highlights being -

ANARITA - over the hose 5 BEE EATER , 2 SWIFT 

ANARITA PARK - 1 GREAT SPOTTED CUCKOO , 4 RED R SWALLOW , 

4 RED FOOTED FALCON , 20 + KESTREL , AT LEAST 3 LESSER KESTREL , CYPRUS WARBLER .

AGIA VAVARIA - POOL - 3 WOOD SANSPIPER , CRESTED LARK , 

12 QUAIL , SAND MARTIN , 4 BEE EATER , 2 BLACK FRANCOLIN 

SECRETVALLEY - 3 CHUKAR , CETTIS WARBLER 

ASPRO DAM - 160 + YELLOW L GULL
