WED 28 MARCH 

A wet early morning followed by sunny periods and showers .

A 45 min Garden Watch from 07.35 produced 23 birds inc -

1M CIRL BUNTING , 3 REED BUNTING , 1 LONG. T TIT , 1 GREAT SP WOODY , 1 LITTLE EGRET flew east . Only common bird not seen was WREN . Looks as though the last cold spell was not too devastating for the TITS & FINCHES .

Offshore this s morning -25 GANNET,1 FULMAR , 3 SANDWICH TERN Flew west .

On South Huish Marsh - Only 7 TEAL , 2 SHELDUCK , 3 LITTLE EGRET , 1 BLACK T GODWIT .

Eric had a GREEN SANDPIPER on the Avon Est this morning 

Late news from Bob - Rod Bone had a M RED B MERGANSER ( 141) in  the Bay on Sunday - this is the first Spring record in the last 10 years 

TUES 27 MARCH 

 Back on the patch after a fabulous 2 weeks in Cyprus , a damp cold morning with an F4 W wind 

On South Huish Marsh - 20 TEAL , 2F SHOVELER, 2 SHELDUCK , 2 COOT , 3 LITTLE EGRET 1 BLACK T GODWIT , 2 STONECHAT 

Offshore only 2 GANNET 

MON 26 MARCH -

At South Huish Marsh - the 1w GLAUCOUS GULL again , 1 LITTLE R PLOVER , 1 WHEATEAR . 8 AVOCET( 140 )  landed briefly mid morning . Offshore 2 RED T DIVER .

Alan managed his first ringing session- only managed 4 new birds in 4 hours , 3 were CHIFFCHAFF , also on site 3 WATER RAIL , TAWNY OWL , GREAT SP WOODY .

On South Efford Marsh Eric reports the SPOONBILL still present

A day of contrasts - showers in the morning , sunny afternoon , E F 5/6 wind .

A brief visit to South Huish Marsh at 08.30- 31 WIGEON , 15 TEAL , 2F SHOVELER , 1 GREY PLOVER , 2 RINGED PLOVER. Amongst the GULLS , lot less than yesterday , 12 MED GULL .

In the Bay 2 GREAT C GREBE .16.00 James K reports a RED T DIVER IN the Bay .

In a 30 min period a passage of 30+ MIPIT Flying N , amongst them 1 WOODLARK ( 133 ) - a rare spokesman pring record 

On T'stone Marsh a CATTLE EGRET , walking through my garden a RED L PARTRIDGE

FRI 9 MARCH 

Like the WIGEON ON South Huish Marsh Spring departed overnight -

a cold wet and miserable morning , low cloud resulted in poor visibility , however a ESE F5 wind did result in a fairly flat sea .

On T'stone Marsh at 08.45 a CATTLE EGRETwith the bulls .

On the sea 3GREAT C GREBE and a RED T DIVER .

On South Huish Marsh -the flock of WIGEON had departed , only 18 TEAL, 1M POCHARD, 5 SHELDUCK , 2 BAR T GODWIT , 2 RINGED PLOVER ,. Amongst the 150+ BLACK H GULL were 11 MED GULL 

( 7ad , 3 2w , 1 1w ) 2 COMMON GULL ,.

Only 1 LITTLE EGRET  in with the cattle 

THURS 8 MARCH 

A sunny morning with a cool NW F5/6 wind , out of the wind a nice spring morning .

In my garden at 08.30 a F BRAMBLING .

A short visit to South Huish Marsh found a lot less numbers than yesterday, the water levels having dropped again-

60 WIGEON , 20 TEAL , 2 SHOVELER , 2 SHELDUCK , 20 LAPWING , 3 RINGED PLOVER , 2 GREY PLOVER , 2 DUNLIN , 2 BAR T GODWIT , 1 BLACK T GODWIT ,5 SNIPE . Amongst the GULLS were - 150 + BLACK HEADED , 5 MED , 6 COMMON , 150+ LESSER BLACK , 25 GREAT BLACK BACKED , .1 CATTLE EGRET still in with the cattle with 2 LITTLE EGRET.

Combination of the Tidal Rd , South Efford & North Marshes produced - 4 REDSHANK , 3 GREENSHANK , 2 GREEN SANDPIPER , 1 GREEN WOODY , 2 NUTHATCH , 1 GREY WAGTAIL & the SPOONBILL .

The GREEN SANPIPERS were th 19th specie of waders recorded this month , that has got to be a March record .

WED 7 MAR

Took Eric over to Beesands Ley to look at the RED N GREBE found by Terry Goddard on Mon . Easily found in the left hand corner from the hide , also 1m SCAUP , 2 POCHARD , 2 GADWALL , 20 TUFTED DUCK , 

1 GREAT C GREBE , 3 LITTLE GREBE , 1 CETTIS WARBLER - calling .

Short visit to South Huish Marsh - water levels have dropped, no sign of the GARGANEY today .100 + WIGEON , 50 TEAL , 1M POCHARD , 2 SHELDUCK , 120+LAPWING , 2 BAR T GODWIT , 1 BLACK T GODWIT , 2 GREY PLOVER , 6 RINGED PLOVER , 2 DUNLIN 

2 GOLDEN PLOVER , 3 LITTLE EGRET , 1 CATTLE EGRET .

Drive along the tidal road at Aveton Gifford  produced -

3 REDSHANK , 2 GREENSHANK , 1 KINGFISHER

A cloudy morning with some heavy rain showers .

on South Huish Marsh from 09.15 - 

1M 1F GARGANEY , 1M POCHARD , 3 SHOVELER, 2 SHELDUCK , 

130 WIGEON ( inc the HYBRID AMERICAN/ WIGEON ) 65 TEAL ,

100 LAPWING , 8 GOLDEN PLOVER , 

8 RINGED PLOVER , 7 DUNLIN , 15 SNIPE , 3 BAR T GODWIT , 1 BLACK T GODWIT , 1 GREY PLOVER , 1 RUFF , SPOONBILL , 6 MED GULL (3ad,3 2w ) 100+ LESSER B B GULL , 35 GREAT B B GULL ,

in the copse field still a flock of around 150 REDWING .

On the rocks 12 TURNSTONE .

At South Efford Marsh Dave P could not find the 2m GARGANEY but he did record - 1 GREY PLOVER , 120 LAPWING , GREENSHANK , REDSHANK , 80 WIGEON , 50 TEAL , 2 SHELDUCK 

The GARGANEY are probably one of the earliest  Devon Spring records - in 1958 there is a record of 1 Jan however this probably relates to an overwintering bird ,since 2000 the earliest date is 9 March 2003 

SUN 4 MAR - WADER FEST & FIRST SPRING MIGRANTS 

A cloudy and wet early morning , sunny periods later , Another very surprising day on the patch -

On T'stone Marsh at 08.30 - 11 TEAL , 2 SHOVELER , 15 REDWING .

Arrived at South Huish Marsh at 09.45 to find a SANDWICH TERN 

(128) amongst a small group of GULLS Which included 8 MED GULL , 

1 AD COMMON GULL , On the water 65+ LESSER B B GULL .

DURING THE DAY a total of12 species of waders on the Marsh - got to be an early March record - 1 KNOT ( 129 ) , 11 DUNLIN , 

9 RINGED PLOVER , 2 RUFF , 7 BLACK T GODWIT , 3 BAR T GODWIT , 20 SNIPE , 1 JACK SNIPE ( 130 ) , 45 LAPWING , 10 OYSTERCATCHER , 4 GREY PLOVER , at 16.00 7 CURLEW flew in . 

The highlight of the morning were a pair of GARGANEY ( 131) found at 11.15 on a flooded field at the back of the Marsh - still present at 16.00, along with 100+ WIGEON , 65 TEAL , 4 SHOVELER , 2 PINTAIL , 1M POCHARD , 1 SHELDUCK .THE SPOONBILL ASLEEP AT THE BACK OF THE MARSH - AT 12.00 picked up a SPOONBILL flying high SSE ( the original one still asleep ! ) 1 LITTLE GREBE STILL PRESENT .

IN the Bay - 30 WIGEON  & a GREAT N DIVER .

In the field by the copse a flock of 200 REDWING , 5 FIELDFARE , 

2 SONG THRUSH .

ERIC also had an unexpected morning on South Efford Marsh - at 10.00 he was watching 2 m GARGANEY, ALSO 2 POCHARD ( patch tick ) 1m PINTAIL , 20 LAPWING , 8 DUNLIN , 1 GREENSHANK , 1 KINGFISHER 

Andy Smith confirmed the 2m GARGANEY Seen this afternoon , also a m RUFF and 85 LAPWING 

 

SAT 3 MAR 

Rain until 13.00 with a light E breeze , still drifts of snow , T'stone Marsh watched08.30- 10.45 before walking over to South Huish Marsh to log 4 year ticks !

T'stone Marsh - 32 TEAL , 2 SHOVELER , 13 GOLDEN PLOVER , 8 LAPWING , 270 STARLING , 4 SONG THRUSH , 280 REDWING ,

105 FIELDFARE , 9 REED BUNTING , 60 SKYLARK ( 1 flock flew E )

at 09.05 picked up a GREAT N DIVER flying E across the Bay - this is no 161 for the garden list 

AT South Huish Marsh - plenty of extra water - 15 DUNLIN , 6 RINGED PLOVER , 6 BLACK T GODWIT , 1 RUFF ( 124 ) , 150 + LAPWING 

3GREY PLOVER ( 125 ) , 3 CURLEW , 3 BAR T GODWIT (126 )WIGEON , TEAL , 1M POCHARD  (127) ( only the 2nd record in 5 years ) 2 SHELDUCK , The SPOONBILL

Another day of watching from my bedroom window , still cannot get out of the courtyard and Thurlestone is still cut off .

Garden/Marsh watched from 08.30-13.00 and 14.30- 16.30 produced an impressive 43 species , one of the best cold weather movements in the last 10 years - highlights - 2500+ REDWING , 

835 FIELDFARE ,( flocks of 100+ of thrushes moving through from 08.30 , this afternoon large numbers feeding on the Marsh )

9 BLACKBIRD , 16 SONG THRUSH , 1 MISTLE THRUSH , 40 LAPWING , 

11 SNIPE , 100+ GOLDEN PLOVER , 1 DUNLIN , 20 MALLARD , 

9 TEAL , 2 SHOVELER, 2 CATTLE EGRET , 2 LITTLE EGRET , 1 WREN , 

4 WATER PIPIT , 8 MIPIT , 2 CIRL BUNTING , 6 REED BUNTING 

At AVETON GIFFORD Eric reports - SPOONBILL , COMMON SANDPIPER, GREENSHANK , REDSHANK , 1 BLACK T GODWIT , 1 SPARROWHAWK , 2 ROCK PIPIT , 2 YELLOWHAMMER , Amongst a flock of CHAFFINCH WERE 4 BRAMBLING ( 123 ) 

Nick managed to get down to South Milton Sands - 5m 3f SHOVELER ( on the sea ) ,4 TURNSTONE , LOTS OF GOLDEN PLOVER , in the fields plenty of REDWING & FIELDFARE 

 

THURS 1 MARCH  Another day confined to the house - cannot get out of the courtyard one drift over a metre deep .  Not so much evidence of cold weather movements today - 37 species logged - most interesting - 9 REED BUNTING , 2 CIRL BUNTING , 16 MIPIT ,2 SKYLARK , 6 SONG THRUSH , 1 FIELDFARE ,  5 REDWING , 1 MISTLE THRUSH , 4 GOLDEN PLOVER , 9 LAPWING . 30 SNIPE  3 LITTLE EGRET 1 CATTLE EGRET , 1 GREAT SP WOODY , 17 STARLING  At Aveton Gifford Eric reported 2 WOODCOCK , GOLDCREST , BLACKCAP , COAL TIT . AROUND Hope Cove James has seen an increase in GOLDEN PLOVER , LAPWING , SNIPE , on the beach DUNLIN , RINGED PLOVER . Received an update today on the GREAT GREY SHRIKE  I found in Cyprus - photos sent to Lars Svensson who confirms it is the nominate -excubitor, it appears this is the first record for this sub specie in Cyprus .
