WED 28 FEB 

Winter arrived with a vengeance! Heavy snow from -9.00- 13.00

with showers on & off most of the afternoon , a strong E wind . Even the RAC van could not reach us !

spent an enjoyable 6 hours watch from my bedroom window - some evidence of cold weather movement . A total of 41 species recorded 

main highlights - 56 SNIPE , 38 LAPWING , 50 GOLDEN PLOVER ( largest flock 20 ) ,  1 WOODCOCK ( 16.55 )65 MIPIT , 15 SKYLARK , 7 SONG THRUSH , 11 TEAL , 6 MALLARD , 3 CATTLE EGRET , 4 LITTLE EGRET , 2 CIRL BUNTING , 4 REED BUNTING , 1 YELLOWHAMMER ,

1F BLACK REDSTART 

In Eric's garden at Aveton Gifford - 2 BLACKCAP , 4 GOLDCREST 

TUES 27 FEB 

Another very cold morning with a NE 5/6 wind .

South Huish Marsh almost completely frozen over - the flock of 85 WIGEON ( inc the Hybrid ) flew off at 09.45 and spent the rest of the morning on the sea ( probably warmer ) , 3 TEAL WITH THEM WITH ANOTHER 11 ON THE MARSH . 18 LAPWING , 11 SNIPE , 4 

BLACK T GODWIT ,1 LITTLE GREBE , 1AD MED GULL , 1 GREAT SP WOODY , 1 CHIFFCHAFF , 2 WATER PIPIT 

Offshore 20 GANNET , 2 MED GULL , 1 RINGED PLOVER on the rocks .

At Huxton Cross at 11.30 a flock of 100 GOLDEN PLOVER ( 122 ) - first at this site for 2 years .

Quick visit to the tidal road at Aveton Gifford - 3 REDSHANK , 2 GREENSHANK , 1 COMMON SANDPIPER , 1 GREY WAGTAIL . The SPOONBILL WAS REPORTED YESTERDAY .

AT 17.30 - THURLESTONE MARSH - 2 EACH OF CATTLE & LITTLE EGRET

A sunny morning with a bitterly cold E F7/8 wind , joined this morning by a cold Graham .

Offshore 50+ GANNET ,,4 TEAL , ON THE ROCKS 3 TURNSTONE , 

2 RINGED PLOVER .

South Huish Marsh partly frozen held 85WIGEON , 20 TEAL , 1 COOT (121) , 15 SNIPE , 14 LAPWING , 6 RINGED PLOVER , 1 DUNLIN , 

4BLACK T GODWIT , 1 WATER PIPIT , 5 LITTLE & 4 CATTLE EGRET 

FRI 23 FEB 

A cloudy morning with a cold ENE F3/4 wind .

On South Huish Marsh 80 WIGEON , only 10 TEAL , 3 BLACK T GODWIT , 3 LAPWING , in the cattle field 7 CATTLE & 3 LITTLE EGRET, 3 more LITTLE on the Marsh .At 11.00 amongst 150 BLACK H GULL were 4 AD, 1 2W , 1 1W MED GULL 

On the rocks 12 TURNSTONE . Offshore 25 GANNET -E , 10 BLACK H GULL in off also an AD MED GULL 

On Thurlestone Marsh at 11.30 single CATTLE & LITTLE EGRET , at 17.30 there were 7 CATTLE & 3 LITTLE EGRET .

Becoming difficult to decide just how many CATTLE EGRETS there are on the patch . One interesting point the LITTLE EGRETS are now feeding with the CATTLE EGRETS at the feet of the cattle 

THURS 22 FEB 

A cold morning with sunny periods and a F3 ENE wind .

First Garden Watch for a few weeks - 07.45 - 08.30 produced 31 species , main interest was a total of 6 CATTLE EGRET & 1LITTLE EGRET flying over towards South Huish Marsh at 07.50 , a m REED BUNTING & 2 SKYLARK , GREAT SP WOODY best of the rest .At 13.00on Thurlestone Marsh were 2 LITTLE & 1 CATTLE EGRET 

On South Huish Marsh - 85 WIGEON , 22 TEAL , 4 BLACK T GODWIT , 3 LAPWING , amongst the 150 BLACK H GULL were 4 MED GULL .

In with the horses were 7 CATTLE EGRET & 5 LITTLE EGRET .

On the rocks 9 TURNSTONE , offshore only 10 GANNET , , a total of 20 COMMON SCOTER flew E inc a flock of 18 ( highest this year ) 

ON South Efford Marsh - WIGEON , TEAL , CURLEW & the SPOONBILL . At Hatch Bridge a DIPPER (120) , 4 GREYLAG GOOSE & a large flock of CANADA GOOSE , 1 CHIFFY 

WED 21 FEB 

After a cloudy start some good sunny periods later with a ENE F3wind . Joined by Graham this morning .

offshore - 6 COMMON SCOTER (E) , 2 FULMAR , 4 WIGEON ( on sea ) , 2 TEAL ( E ) 2 COMMON GULL , 1 GREAT N DIVER (E @ 11.55 ) 

On the rocks 6 RINGED PLOVER .

On South Huish Marsh the flock of BLACK H GULL only around 150 including 5 MED GULL ( All ad ) , 4 BLACK T GODWIT , 4 LAPWING , 4 SNIPE , 75 WIGEON , 22 TEAL , . IN the cattle field 7 CATTLE EGRET & 2 LITTLE EGRET

TUES 20 FEB 

A sunny day with an F3/4 N wind .  Returning from Bristol Airport at 12.45 am had a TAWNY OWL in the lanes and a BARN OWL  ( 119 ) 

at Aveton Gifford 

On South Huish Marsh at 10.00 an influx of GULLS - amongst 

450+ BLACK H GULL were 18 MED GULL ( 16 ad , 1 2w , 1 1w ) ,

6ad COMMON GULL , 250 + HERRING GULL , 5 LESSER B B GULL .

3 BLACK T GODWIT , 2 LAPWING , 80 WIGEON , the Hybrid AMERICAN /WIGEON , 22 TEAL , 2 SHELDUCK , 4 CATTLE EGRET , 5 LITTLE EGRET , 1 LITTLE GREBE , 4 RINGED PLOVER - on the rocks .

At South Efford Marsh the SPOONBILL has been showing regularly , also up to 6 WATER PIPIT 

 

FRI 2 FEB 

 Fine sunny morning with onlya light N breeze after a light frost at dawn .

offshore ,a 2 hour  seawatch from 08.30 - 45 GANNET , 55 AUKS -W 

15 on the sea , 1 FULMAR -W , 1M WIGEON - on the sea , 1 RED T DIVER - W @ 08.32 , 1BLACK T DIVER -W @10.15 .

On the rocks - 8 RINGED PLOVER , 6 TURNSTONE.

Only addition to the birds on South Huish Marsh was an ad 

MED GULL .

IN WITH THE CATTLE I COULD ONLY FIND 6 CATTLE EGRET &

3 LITTLE EGRET 

Along the tidal road at Aveton Gifford - 3 COMMON SANDPIPER ,

9 REDSHANK , 5 GREENSHANK , CURLEW , 2 LITTLE GREBE , 

1 NUTHATCH , 1 GREAT SP WOODY , COAL TIT.

ON NORTH MARSH 3 WATER PIPIT .

AT HUXTON CROSS - 35 FIELDFARE , 10 REDWING , SKYLARK .

A phone call from Dave Pakes made go to Beesands Ley this afternoon where he had found a M SCAUP , the RINGED NECKED DUCK still amongst the flock of TUFTED DUCK, also 7 GADWALL 

THURS 1 FEB 

A sunny morning with an F3/4 N wind 

An hours garden watch from 07.35 produced 30 species inc - 

2 CIRL BUNTING , 1M 3F REED BUNTING , 4 GREENFINCH 2 KESTREL

1 WATER RAIL , 2 REDWING , 1 SONG THRUSH , 3 STOCK DOVE .

 

At 20.30 A TAWNY OWL CALLING 

On South Huish Marsh - 75 WIGEON , HYBRID , 40 TEAL , 6 SHELDUCK , 4 LAPWING , 1 SNIPE , 1 BLACK T GODWIT , 

7 CATTLE EGRET , 4 LITTLE EGRET , 1 MISTLE THRUSH , 6 STOCK DOVE, PEREGRINE & SPRAWK flew over .

On the rocks 6 RINGED PLOVER , Offshore a few AUKS , GANNET , KITTIWAKE , 1 FULMAR 

A quick visit to South Milton Ley - 20+CHIFFY , 2 SIB CHIFFY , 

2 GOLDCREST, 1 FIRECREST , 1 GREY WAGTAIL , 4 LONG T TIT 

A total of 68 species logged .
